The most important part of this process is to make sure all companies bidding your project are licensed, bonded, and insured. A company, or crew that can do the work, but is working illegally can do the work cheaper yes, but your exposure and liability go through the roof!
DON’T – Communicate different information and ideas to the next contractor that looks at your project. Verbal communication only can leave things open to interpretation (You now have 2 contractors with different scopes of work which will result in different prices automatically)
DON’T – Tell one company you want slab granite countertops, and the next one you want tile. These are very different products and installations. This will not help you compare costs while trying to choose a contractor.
If you are working with an honest, reputable firm, they will guide through accomplishing your project goal within your budget.
DON’T – Don’t plan to start a project without funding and without budget. Don’t change your mind and tell different companies different budget prices. This again will not help you get an Apples to Apples quote from each contractor.
DON’T – Take all quotes you receive at face value. It is not realistic to think the same project can be done thousands of dollars cheaper without compromising quality. Contractors may have different approaches to your project, and questions will help you determine which is the best, most thorough approach.
